Closing the Gap: Transforming Education with Tech4Learning

Access to technology has become a cornerstone of education in today’s increasingly connected world. Yet, for many children across the UK, this access remains out of reach, leaving them at risk of falling behind. To address this challenge, the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) launched Tech4Learning – a programme designed to ensure equitable access to digital devices, empowering schools to close the gap in opportunity and learning outcomes.

The Tech4Learning programme is built on a simple but impactful idea: every child deserves the tools they need to succeed, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. By partnering with schools, the DPA provides a seamless way for communities to fund, distribute, and manage personal devices for pupils who need them most.

Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, commented:
“Access to technology is no longer optional for education. It’s essential for every aspect of learning, from homework to exams. Tech4Learning empowers schools to ensure every pupil has a fair chance to succeed, regardless of their background. This programme is about giving every child the tools to thrive in a digital world.”

At its core, Tech4Learning is more than a device donation programme – it is a structured, sustainable solution that enables schools to implement a 1:1 device scheme equitably and effectively. The programme enables schools to:

  • Collect donations through an easy-to-use platform, simplifying contributions from parents, guardians, and other donors.
  • Maximise funding with Gift Aid, which adds 25% to eligible contributions.
  • Provide devices for all pupils, ensuring no child is left without access, even if a donation hasn’t been made on their behalf.

The need for such a programme is urgent. Research by the DPA shows that 90% of secondary school students are required to complete online tasks weekly, yet one in five children in the UK still lack access to a suitable device at home. Without action, this disparity perpetuates inequality in education.

Tech4Learning’s strength lies in its straightforward and sustainable design. Schools benefit from a transparent management portal, live data reporting, and ongoing support, ensuring that every pound raised delivers maximum impact. Beyond devices, the initiative fosters digital skills and preparedness, equipping pupils for exams, further studies, and the workplace.

The DPA believes in a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive. Tech4Learning is a key step toward that vision, demonstrating the power of collaboration between schools, communities, and supporters.
