Today marks the second annual End Digital Poverty Day, an initiative proudly launched by the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) in 2023 to accelerate action and unite efforts to end digital poverty across the UK. This day has quickly become a focal point for raising awareness, galvanising communities, and inspiring collective action to close the digital divide that affects millions.
Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, highlights the importance of the day:
“End Digital Poverty Day is about more than just awareness – it is about driving action across all sectors to address one of the UK’s most pressing social issues. It is incredibly encouraging to see so many people and organisations stepping up, but there is still much more to be done.”
This year, we have collaborated with partners, stakeholders, and the public to support a diverse range of both online and in-person events. These include webinars, skill-building workshops, and educational sessions designed to empower communities with practical ways to combat digital inequality. These initiatives provide opportunities for individuals across the UK to actively engage in closing the digital divide and directly benefit those affected by digital exclusion. Leading up to today, and throughout End Digital Poverty Day, we have promoted these events across our social media platforms, shining a spotlight on the collective effort to fight digital exclusion nationwide.
Impact and Progress
Over the past few months, the Digital Poverty Alliance has achieved significant milestones in our mission to end digital poverty. One of the most notable accomplishments has been the launch of our National Delivery Plan Overview – a comprehensive roadmap for realising our vision of a digitally inclusive UK. Additionally, our Charter for Digital Inclusion continues to serve as a guiding framework for stakeholders and partners, outlining impactful actions needed to tackle digital poverty head-on.
We are also pleased to announce the launch of Tech4Youth Solway today. Initially launched in North and West Leicestershire in partnership with the Barratt Foundation, this initiative has now expanded to benefit even more young people. Supported by Voneus and the Macquarie Group Foundation, Tech4Youth Solway offers essential technology such as laptops and free broadband access, along with digital literacy workshops. This expansion into Solway represents a critical step towards ensuring that young people have the digital resources they need for their education and future success.
Furthermore, we have published the findings of our Tech4Families research report, which is part of the broader Tech4Families programme developed in partnership with Currys. The programme seeks to close the digital divide by providing families in need with essential technology – such as laptops and tablets – alongside internet connectivity and digital skills training. It aims to ensure that families across the UK, particularly in digitally excluded areas, are equipped with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
End Digital Poverty Day Gala Reception
This evening, we will close the day’s events with the End Digital Poverty Day Gala Reception, set against the iconic backdrop of the Cartoon Museum in London’s West End. The reception will bring together leaders, partners, and advocates who are committed to addressing digital inequality. It offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the progress made and to acknowledge the ongoing work required to bridge the digital divide.
As part of our fundraising efforts, we are also launching a Gala Reception auction, featuring a curated selection of exclusive items. By participating in the auction, you will directly support the vital work of the Digital Poverty Alliance and help amplify our efforts to end digital poverty. The auction is open to everyone, not just those attending the Gala Reception.
We extend our thanks to all our partners, collaborators, and participants for their continued dedication to ending digital poverty in the UK. Together, we are driving meaningful, tangible progress towards a future where digital poverty is no longer a barrier to opportunity.
Today, Thursday, September 12, marks the second annual End Digital Poverty Day.
