Since its launch in June 2024, the Digital Poverty Alliance’s Charter for Digital Inclusion has united organisations across the UK in a shared commitment to closing the digital divide. With more than 30 signatories spanning the private, public, and third sectors – including Currys, VMO2, AbilityNet, Cornwall Council, and, most recently, The Open University and University of Essex – the Charter is empowering organisations to take meaningful action in advancing digital access and inclusion.

Digital exclusion affects more than 19 million people in the UK, limiting access to vital services, education, employment, and social engagement. One in seven adults and one in five children lack the tools, skills, or connectivity required to thrive in today’s digital-first society. Meanwhile, over eight million households face difficulties affording communication services. The Charter for Digital Inclusion provides a clear, action-driven framework for organisations to make a real impact. By signing, organisations commit to at least three key actions: raising awareness of digital poverty, improving accessibility in digital services, donating devices to those in need, delivering digital skills training, and forging partnerships to drive systemic change. Each commitment brings us closer to a future where digital opportunities are available to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance.

Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, emphasised the significance of this growing coalition: “Digital inclusion is not just about connectivity – it is about opportunity. Organisations that sign the Charter are taking meaningful action to ensure that no one is excluded from the benefits of the digital world. This is about creating real, lasting change.”

The momentum behind the Charter reflects a collective recognition that digital exclusion affects education, employment, and essential services. Every new signatory strengthens a nationwide movement working towards a digitally inclusive society where no one is left behind.

Organisations looking to make a lasting impact are invited to sign the Charter and contribute to a movement that is shaping the future of digital inclusion.
