One login, many doors: Rethinking access to government services

For millions across the UK, accessing essential government services still begins with a barrier.

From DBS checks and apprenticeship information to housing forms and benefit applications, public services increasingly require users to navigate fragmented digital systems, verify their identity repeatedly, and manage multiple logins. For those with limited digital confidence or inconsistent device access, the process can feel impenetrable – designed for someone else.

This is not a minor inconvenience. It is a structural exclusion.

GOV.UK One Login offers a different approach.

Launched as part of the government’s digital transformation programme, GOV.UK One Login provides a single, secure account for accessing a growing number of public services. Users verify their identity once, then use that same account to interact with multiple departments – simplifying the journey while strengthening security.

Over nine million people have already created a One Login account, with more services joining the platform each month. Built to the highest security standards, the system also includes flexible identity verification options, accessibility features, and offline access via the Post Office – ensuring that no one is left behind.

To support wider awareness and uptake, the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) and the GOV.UK One Login team are co-hosting a free webinar on Tuesday 29 July from 1-2pm.

The session will explore how the platform works, the range of services already using it, and how organisations can support communities in adopting it. Attendees will also gain access to a campaign toolkit with communication materials, a Helpers Guide for those assisting others, and guidance on integrating One Login into frontline support.

Digital access is not just a matter of connectivity – it is a matter of design, trust, and simplicity. A unified sign-in may seem small, but its impact can be transformative.
