Digital access is the gateway to opportunity, yet millions across the UK remain shut out, unable to participate in the modern economy. This exclusion is not just a social challenge – it is an economic crisis, costing the UK an estimated £17 billion in untapped potential. At this year’s Conservative Party Conference, the Digital Poverty Alliance is hosting the panel “Unlocking £17 billion: Tackling Digital Poverty to Boost the Economy,” to explore how targeted action can transform digital exclusion into economic growth.
Addressing digital poverty is more than a matter of fairness – it is about seizing an opportunity to drive productivity and innovation. Whether holding government to account or working within local councils, understanding how digital exclusion hampers economic growth is critical. The solutions are within reach, and this panel will focus on how we can take practical steps to unlock the UK’s potential.
Chaired by Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, the panel will feature prominent voices from across sectors:
- Matt Warman, Former Digital Industries Minister
- Kevin Larkin, Head of Policy & Communications, Coalfields Regeneration Trust
- Simon Parkinson, Chief Executive and General Secretary, WEA
The panel will dive into how tackling digital exclusion can directly boost the economy by removing the barriers that prevent millions from accessing essential digital tools and skills. From improving infrastructure in underserved areas to expanding digital literacy programmes, the discussion will focus on real-world strategies that can drive economic progress. With insights from industry experts and policy leaders, the conversation will emphasise the vital role of collaboration between central government, local authorities, and the private sector in ensuring that digital access becomes a priority for long-term growth and prosperity.
This is not just about addressing inequality – it is about unlocking the immense economic potential of millions who are currently excluded from the workforce. By ensuring access to the digital tools and skills essential for success in today’s world, we can drive significant economic growth, boost innovation, and create a more inclusive economy. The benefits of bridging the digital divide extend far beyond individual empowerment; they hold the key to ensuring the UK remains competitive and resilient in the global market.
The potential of digital inclusivity in rural and coastal areas is also huge. For those cut off from jobs and opportunities through geography, through to areas which have seen industrial decline, individual and community prosperity can be grown through digital means. Whether this is about accessing the 90% of jobs which are only advertised online, through to creating new businesses, a vast array of talent is being shut out of the workforce.
The time to act is now. By tackling digital poverty with targeted, strategic interventions, we can unlock £17 billion in untapped potential, build a more prosperous society, and lay the foundation for sustained economic progress. Addressing digital exclusion is not just an opportunity – it is an imperative for the future success of the UK.
