In June of this year, the Digital Poverty Alliance marked a significant milestone on the journey toward digital equity by launching our Charter for Digital Inclusion. Since its introduction, more than 25 organisations have committed to this collective vision by signing the Charter, highlighting the urgent need to address digital exclusion. More than just a document, the Charter embodies a commitment to ensure everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to the digital opportunities essential in today’s digital world. We’re inviting organisations across the UK to join this movement, take concrete action to bridge the digital divide, and create lasting change.
The Charter: A Commitment to Impact
The Charter for Digital Inclusion is a transformative call to action for organisations in all sectors to integrate digital inclusivity into their operations. By signing, organisations pledge to support at least three of the following impactful actions, which drive change for communities affected by digital poverty:
- Raising Awareness: Amplifying public understanding of digital poverty and its societal impact.
- Accessible Services: Ensuring digital platforms and services are intuitive and accessible to all, especially those with disabilities.
- Device Donation: Encouraging the donation of essential digital devices to bridge the technology gap.
- Digital Skills Development: Providing training and resources to enhance digital literacy and essential skills across communities.
- Partnerships for Impact: Collaborating with other organisations to broaden collective reach and effectiveness.
Why This Matters Now
Joel Tiller, Head of External Affairs at the Digital Poverty Alliance, highlights the significance of this initiative: “Our Charter for Digital Inclusion is a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive digital environment. By signing the Charter, organisations address social equity and demonstrate a commitment to corporate social responsibility.” He adds, “Digital poverty is a significant barrier to equality and progress. It includes not only a lack of devices or internet access but also gaps in digital skills and literacy, which hinder economic and social inclusion. The Charter calls on organisations to unite, leveraging their resources, expertise, and influence to overcome these barriers and promote a more inclusive society.”
The challenges of digital poverty extend beyond access to technology; they encompass the critical digital skills necessary to participate fully in today’s digital world. By addressing these issues, your organisation can help create a future where digital opportunities are accessible to all, fostering greater equity and resilience.
