Circular Economy, Data Security, and the Role of Refurbished Computers

In an age where technology is indispensable, the production of computers, especially components like chips, demands enormous energy resources. This high energy consumption significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, a primary driver of climate change. At the end of their lifecycle, computers often become electronic waste (e-waste), a growing environmental challenge. However, Computer Recyclers UK, through their Secure I.T Asset Disposition & Re-Use Services, offers a solution to this problem by extending the life of electronic devices, preventing them from ending up in landfills.

Unlike linear economies that follow a “take, make, dispose” model, the circular economy seeks to minimise waste and keep products and materials in use for as long as possible. The impact of this approach is substantial. For example, refurbishing just one laptop can save, on average, 316 kg of carbon emissions, 190,000 litres of water, and up to 1,200 kg of natural resources—benefits that are lost when purchasing a new device.

Data security is a critical concern when disposing of and re-using redundant I.T equipment. Meeting GDPR compliance is essential, and Computer Recyclers UK ensures this through their adherence to the ADISA Standard 8.0 certification, a rigorous process approved by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). As a UKAS-accredited certification body, ADISA guarantees that Computer Recyclers UK meets recognised standards, providing clients with the confidence that legal compliance is maintained while offering every opportunity for equipment re-use.

Computer Recyclers UK plays a pivotal role in the circular economy by offering refurbished computers through the Get Online @ Home initiative, which has been dedicated to promoting digital inclusion since 2010. Their current efforts align with the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA), striving to end digital exclusion in the UK by 2030.

For the remainder of 2024, customers can take advantage of an additional 10% discount on any refurbished computer purchased through Get Online @ Home. This discount can be used in conjunction with existing promotions by simply adding the product(s) to your basket and applying the code ‘EDPD2024’. Moreover, if you add more than one product to your basket, an additional 10% discount is automatically applied, making it easier than ever to contribute to a sustainable future.
